Srinagar, Jan 24: In a major boost to foodgrain supply and logistics in Kashmir, the first full rake of rice was successfully transported to Anantnag in south Kashmir by rail on January 22, highlighting the reliability of Indian Railways’ all-weather connectivity to the region.
The 42 BCN food grain rake arrived at Anantnag Goods Terminal from Sangrur Goods Shed of Ambala Division.
“Despite disruptions in unloading activities due to adverse weather conditions, the first full rake of food grains (rice) was successfully unloaded at Anantnag Railway Station today,” a Railway official said.
He said the 42 BCN goods train rake was loaded from Sangrur Goods Shed of Ambala Division in collaboration with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and reached Anantnag Goods Terminal in record time, within 24 hours.
This is the first time that a full rake of 42 wagons has reached the Kashmir Valley directly, carrying approximately 2768 tonnes of rice.
“The total weight of foodgrain on the train is equivalent to transporting 100 trucks full of rice. Railways will soon be transporting other commodities, apart from cement and foodgrains, in the region,” the railway official said.
Recent rains/snowfall and adverse weather conditions were hindering the unloading process.
This success will increase the availability of food grains in the valley and reduce the pressure on NH-44.
According to Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Uchit Singhal, this achievement enhances the logistics capacity of the Kashmir Valley and ensures an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities for local traders and the general public.
“Northern Railway is committed to promoting food security and economic development in Jammu and Kashmir, especially during the winter months when road routes are often closed. This swift action by the railways is proving to be a game-changer,” he said.
Earlier, a full rake of 21 BCN wagons carrying food grains was successfully handled for the first time at Anantnag Goods Terminal.
