Four BJP Councillors Resign from LAHDC Kargil, Demand Delimitation and Fresh Polls

Kargil, Sep 7: Four BJP councillors of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, on Monday announced their resignation, demanding immediate delimitation of constituencies and fresh elections to the council.

The four councillors, Stanzin Lakpa from Cha, Padma Dorjay from Stakchey Khangral, and nominated councillors Rigzin Gurmet and Lamgual Phonchock, said they had submitted their resignations to the Chief Executive Officer of LAHDC Kargil.

Addressing a press conference, the councillors said changes in the territorial composition of areas under the Kargil Hill Council had made it necessary to redraw constituencies and seek a fresh electoral mandate.

They said certain areas that were earlier part of the jurisdiction of LAHDC Kargil had subsequently been included in other administrative districts, including the newly carved Sham district. According to them, these changes have altered the existing territorial and representative structure of the council.

The councillors also expressed concern over delays in the passage of the council's budget, saying the situation had affected its functioning and development activities and caused inconvenience to the people.

They demanded that the delimitation process be initiated without further delay and that constituencies be redrawn in accordance with the present administrative boundaries.

Calling for immediate elections to LAHDC Kargil, the councillors said a fresh mandate was necessary in view of the changed territorial realities.

The resignation of two elected and two nominated councillors is expected to add to the political uncertainty surrounding the Hill Council.
