
MeT forecasts another wet spell from Feb 25-28
Many upper reaches in Kashmir received fresh snowfall while the plains received intermittent rains on Friday.
A MeT official said famous tourist resorts of Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam received fresh overnight snowfall.
They said snowfall was also recorded in Anantnag, Zojila Pass, Banihal, Sadhna Pass, and Machil in Kupwara, and Razdan Pass in Bandipora.
The plains including Srinagar were lashed by overnight intermittent rains.
The Meteorological Department said in past 24 hours, Kashmir experienced light to moderate rain in the plains and light to moderate snow over the higher reaches with isolated moderate to heavy snowfall.
Due to snowfall and rains, the region experienced a sharp decline in temperatures over the past 24 hours, with day temperatures plummeting by 6-14°C in many areas.
In Kashmir, temperatures fell by 7-14°C, with C, Srinagar at 10.7°C, Pahalgam at 4.8°C, Kupwara at 4.7°C, and Gulmarg recording the coldest at 1.0°C.
In Jammu region, Kathua saw the highest temperature at 15.8°C, followed by Mirpur at 15.5°C and Jammu at 14.8°C. Other notable temperatures were Banihal at 5.2°C and Bhaderwah at 6.3°C.
The MeT office said while the weather is likely to remain cloudy it will be generally dry from February 21-24.
“Light to moderate rain or snow is possible at most places, with isolated heavy falls, during February 25-28,” it said.
Kashmir has witnessed a mostly dry winter this year with the months of January and February recording a precipitation deficit of around 80 per cent.
However, the wet weather spell along with the forecast of more precipitation have raised hopes among the people of reducing the high rainfall deficit in Kashmir.
