Min Itoo reviews site, finalises plans
In a significant step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure in north Kashmir, Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, on Wednesday conducted a detailed inspection of the newly identified site at Natnosa, Handwara for the construction of Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara.
Accompanied by Advisor to CM Nasir Aslam Wani, several MLAs, Secretary Health and Medical Education Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, and senior engineers from key departments including R&B, Jal Shakti, and KPDCL, the Minister evaluated the site’s accessibility, topography, and suitability for hosting a large-scale medical facility.
"Transformative Project for Kupwara"
Calling GMC Handwara a “transformative development”, the Minister said the medical college will enhance healthcare access, create opportunities in medical education and employment, and serve frontier regions such as Karnah, Lolab, and Keran.
“We are committed to choosing a location that ensures optimal patient access, logistical feasibility, and scope for future expansion,” she said.
She also interacted with locals, assuring them that community interests will be taken into account.
Flood-Prone Old Site Abandoned
During a follow-up meeting at Dak Banglow Kupwara, the Minister highlighted that the earlier site selected by the previous administration had been declared flood-prone and unfeasible. An enquiry is already underway into that selection, which resulted in loss to the public exchequer.
She emphasized that the Natnosa site was agreed upon in earlier meetings with district MLAs, and that formal surveys and assessments have been completed.
Instructions for Timely Execution
The Minister directed concerned departments to expedite technical evaluations and submit a comprehensive project report within a week. She also asked Jal Shakti and KPDCL officials to ensure water and electricity supply readiness at the site.
Calling GMC Handwara a “prestigious and people-centric” project, she urged all stakeholders to work in coordination to bring the college to timely and successful completion.
