GMC Srinagar hosts First NELS ToT program

Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, in collaboration with the Department of Emergency Medicine, JPNATC, AIIMS New Delhi, and the Disaster Management Cell, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, successfully hosted the first Training of Trainers (ToT) program for the National Emergency Life Support (NELS) course for paramedics.
The three-day workshop, held from August 12-14, 2025, at GMC Srinagar, brought together 24 senior doctors and nursing supervisors from GMC Srinagar, associated hospitals, and the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir. These medical professionals were trained and certified in the NELS course, enhancing their skills in emergency medical care.
Prof. Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal, GMC Srinagar, emphasized the significance of such training programs in improving healthcare and patient care systems in the region. “This training will go a long way in enhancing our emergency response capabilities and ultimately benefiting our patients,” she said.
The program was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ommid Nodal Officer, NELS Skill Centre, GMC Srinagar. Other key officials who attended the program include Mohamad Ashraf Hakak, Administrator Associated Hospitals GMC Srinagar; Prof Dr.Hina Bashir, HOD Anesthesiology; Prof. Dr. Rakesh Koul, Head of Department, Medicine; faculty members, Medical Superintendent, SMHS Hospital, Dy. MS, GMC Srinagar, Medical Officers from GMC Srinagar and associated hospitals
This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening emergency medical services in Jammu and Kashmir, aligning with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and services across the country.
The training program was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Emergency Medicine, JPNATC, AIIMS New Delhi, a WHO Collaborating Centre for Emergency and Trauma Care, and the Disaster Management Cell, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government hospitals.
The course faculty from JPN Apex Trauma Centre AIIMS New Delhi, were Dr Ankit, Dr Charu, Dr Sooresh and Dr Hannah who conducted the structured workshop with utmost zeal.
The workshop was followed by a brainstorming session across the strata of medical fraternity with renewed enthusiasm about setting and coordination between various stakeholders to try to deliver and enhance our approach towards disaster and trauma management.
