Govt conducts safety audit of 778 roads, 382 bridges in J&K

11 bridges unsafe, 250 need major repairs

The government has conducted safety audits of 778 roads across Jammu and Kashmir during the past two years, leading to remarkable infrastructure upgrades and the identification of critical issues.
According to the official data, over 4.26 lakh meters of crash barriers, 31,300 meters of parapets, and 3.11 lakh meters of protection walls have been installed to prevent accidents. Additionally, 15,566 road signs have been put in place, while 545 black spots have been successfully rectified to enhance commuter safety.
The data shows that the government carried out a safety audit of 382 bridges, constructed over 20 years ago, which revealed alarming conditions.
It says that the audit found 11 bridges to be unsafe, 250 requiring major repairs, and 121 needing minor repairs.
“The unsafe bridges have been closed for traffic, and their reconstruction is currently underway, while repair work on the other bridges has also been initiated,” adds the data.
