Govt restructures medical posts, faces student backlash

October 11, 2025 | BK News Service

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered the creation of 121 posts of Senior Residents and Tutors in Government Medical Colleges Srinagar and Jammu by abolishing 307 posts of House Physicians and House Surgeons, drawing criticism from the medical fraternity.

As per Government Order No. 663-JK (HME) of 2025, issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, 54 posts of Senior Residents/Tutors have been created in GMC Srinagar by reducing 137 posts of House Physicians/House Surgeons. Similarly, 67 Senior Resident/Tutor posts have been created in GMC Jammu by reducing 170 such posts.
The order, issued by Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, Secretary to the Government, follows the Council of Ministers’ decision dated September 23, 2025.
However, the move has sparked strong opposition from medical students. Reacting to the development, All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) Vice President Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan termed the decision “really unfair.”
“The government has cut 307 House Physician posts to create 121 SR posts, a net loss of 186 jobs. This kills MBBS job opportunities,” Dr. Khan said.
He urged the administration to review the decision, saying it would adversely impact hundreds of MBBS graduates awaiting short-term postings and clinical experience in government hospitals.
