Guidance is in Allah’s Hands

The first and most important point is that guidance and misguidance are in the hands of Allah. Only Allah knows what lies in people’s hearts. He knows who is genuinely searching for the truth and who is following pride, ego, or selfish desires

Many people feel confused when they read verses of the Qur’an that speak about guidance and misguidance. They begin to wonder whether human actions are truly in their own hands or not. They ask: If everything is already decided by Allah, then what is the point of trying? This confusion is not new. Thinkers, scholars, and ordinary people have asked these questions for centuries. But if we reflect with a clear mind and a sincere heart, we will see that the truth is not as complicated as it may seem.

The first and most important point is that guidance and misguidance are in the hands of Allah. Only Allah knows what lies in people’s hearts. He knows who is genuinely searching for the truth and who is following pride, ego, or selfish desires. He knows who asks questions sincerely to understand and who argues only to prove themselves right. In the Qur’an, Allah says that He guides whom He wills and leaves astray whom He wills. At first, this might look unfair, but when we reflect deeper we realise that Allah does not act unjustly. Rather, He responds according to the condition of our hearts.
Allah never forces anyone into misguidance. He never pushes someone into darkness. Instead, He gives everyone a fair chance. When a person opens their heart to truth with sincerity, Allah opens the doors of guidance for them. But when someone closes their heart out of arrogance or hatred, Allah allows them to continue on the path they have chosen. This is not injustice—it is the result of their own decisions.
Take the example of Pharaoh. He was shown many clear signs and miracles by Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). The staff turned into a snake, the water turned to blood, and the sea was parted. Yet Pharaoh still refused to believe. Not because he could not understand, but because his heart was filled with pride. He did not want to admit that someone else might be right. He feared losing his power. His arrogance closed the door to guidance, and that is why he went astray.
Now compare this with Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), who was raised in Pharaoh’s own palace. His heart was sincere. When he saw the truth, he accepted it with humility. He listened and submitted to the will of Allah. Because of this sincerity, Allah chose him for the great responsibility of prophethood. This contrast shows us that guidance does not depend on status, wealth, or education—it depends only on the state of the heart.
Another beautiful example is that of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Many of them were once enemies of Islam. Some even fought against the Prophet in battle. But later, they became his closest followers. What changed? Their hearts. When they sincerely opened their hearts to the message of Islam and searched for the truth, Allah guided them. He forgave their past and filled their future with light.
Guidance is a gift from Allah, but it is also something that must be sought with sincerity. We must desire it, pray for it, and be willing to accept it—even when it goes against our ego or personal desires. Sometimes we are shown the truth, but our pride refuses to accept it. We tell ourselves, If I accept this, it means I was wrong all this time. Instead of humbling ourselves, we choose denial. This is how the heart begins to harden.
The Qur’an repeatedly tells us that Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. This is a powerful message: we must take the first step. We must turn towards Allah, cleanse our hearts from pride, jealousy, hatred, and dishonesty. When we do this, Allah guides us and makes the path easier. But if we refuse to change within, then nothing outside can help us.
Often, people blame fate for their mistakes. They say, This was written for me. But the truth is, Allah has given us free will. He gave us a mind to think, a heart to feel, and sent prophets, scriptures, and countless signs around us. He does not leave us in darkness. If we choose to close our eyes, then we are responsible for our fall. Destiny does not force us to sin—it is our choices that shape our destiny.
There is deep wisdom in the way Allah deals with each person. He is fair, just, and merciful. He never turns away anyone who sincerely seeks guidance. Even if a person has made many mistakes, even if they have lived years in sin—if they turn to Allah with a sincere heart, He will guide them, forgive them, and honour them. But if someone pretends to seek truth while hiding arrogance inside, Allah knows their reality. He cannot be deceived.
True guidance is not about collecting facts, winning debates, or proving others wrong. It is about finding peace in the truth, connecting with Allah, and living with honesty and humility. A person may have little knowledge, but if their heart is pure, Allah will guide them. Another may have great knowledge, but if their heart is filled with pride, they will only go further astray.
The real journey begins when we ask ourselves honestly: Why am I seeking the truth? Is it to become a better person, or to show off? Am I willing to accept the truth even if it hurts my ego? Do I beg Allah for guidance with sincerity, or do I act as though I deserve it without effort? These reflections open the doors of sincerity.
In the end, the message is simple: if we truly want guidance, we must open our hearts. We must turn to Allah with sincerity, humility, and honesty. Only then will the light of guidance enter. It is not a matter of chance—it is a matter of choice. And that choice is ours to make, every single day.
Let us pray that Allah keeps our hearts soft, our minds open, and our steps firm upon the path of truth. Let us never be among those who see the signs yet turn away. May we become seekers of truth, not for arguments, but for healing. For guidance is not just about finding the straight path—it is about finding Allah.
