Gulmarg, upper reaches receive snowfall

October 07, 2025 | Ayaan Wani

The ski resort of Gulmarg and other higher reaches of Kashmir experienced snowfall on Monday.

A MeT officials said that Affarwat and Kongdori in Gulmarg ski resort of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Sinthan Top in Anantnag district, Razdan Top in Bandipora district, and Zojila in Ganderbal district were among the areas to receive snowfall. The Peer Ki Gali on Mughal road also experienced the season's first snowfall today.
The vehicular movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road was suspended following fresh snowfall at Razdan Top.
Officials said the move was taken purely as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of travellers.
Authorities have advised residents and tourists to exercise caution while travelling in higher reaches, as roads may be slippery due to snow and wet conditions.
The plains including Srinagar recorded light rainfall.
MeT had predicted widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, snow, and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir today, while it has forecast fairly widespread light to moderate rain, snow, and thunderstorms tomorrow.
“Light to moderate rain (light snow over higher reaches) is expected till forenoon or afternoon tomorrow and improvement thereafter. On October 8, a brief spell of light rain is expected at a few places. Generally dry weather is expected from October 9 to October 16,” the MeT official said.
The MeT had advised farmers to suspend all activities between October 6 and 7.
“There is a possibility of landslides, shooting stones at vulnerable places with a possibility of light to moderate snow over higher reaches of Kashmir, Chenab valley and Pir Panjal range and possibility of moderate to heavy snow over few higher reaches of South Kashmir and Chenab Valley,” he said.
The snow and rain has led to a sharp dip in temperature, signalling the onset of the winter season in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
The day temperature in the valley dipped by nearly 10 degrees, with the city recording a maximum of around 11 degrees Celsius on Monday, compared to 22.6 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier.
The MeT has warned of possible landslides and shooting stones at vulnerable stretches and light to moderate snowfall over the higher reaches of Kashmir, Chenab Valley, and the Pir Panjal range.
