Gunfight erupts in SoporeA

An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday evening.
A police official said a cordon and search operation was jointly launched by police, CRPF and army at Check Mohalla Nowpora area of Sopore in the evening after receiving inputs about the presence of militants there.
He said while the search operation was going on, the security men came under gunfire from terrorists hiding in the area.
“The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter. The exchange of gunfire between the two sides was going on when reports last poured in,” the police official said.
They said a civilian identified as Farooq Ahmed Dar received a bullet injury in his shoulder during the encounter.
The injured was shifted to a nearby health facility and his condition is stated to be stable.
Sources said additional troops have been rushed to the area to tighten the siege.
“We have got inputs that two militants are believed to be trapped in the area,” they said.
This is the second gun battle in as many days in north Kashmir.
On Wednesday, terrorists and security forces exchanged fire in Bandipora district of north Kashmir. The combing operation to trace the militants continued for a second day today.
