Mughal Road closed for traffic
Light to moderate snowfall was recorded in several higher reaches during the past 24 hours, while light rain occurred at many places in the Jammu division, officials said on Thursday.
A MeT official said it was already anticipated that Western Disturbances (WDs) would remain largely confined to north and central Kashmir.
According to official data, Sadhna Pass in Kupwara district received around 6 inches of fresh snowfall, while Gurez and Tulail areas in Bandipora district recorded 8 to 12 inches.
The Sonamarg–Zojila axis in Ganderbal district witnessed 5 to 8 inches of snow, whereas the ski resort of Gulmarg received about 2 inches.
The higher reaches of Pahalgam also recorded around 2 inches of snowfall.
Meanwhile, Mughal Road and Sinthan Top received 2 to 4 inches of snow, while light rain was reported from several parts of the Jammu division.
The road, which connects Shopian district of south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Jammu region, was closed after snowfall at Peer Ki Gali.
Officials said the traffic movement on Mughal Road was completely suspended due to fresh snowfall, which has made the stretch slippery and unsafe for vehicular movement. The closure has been enforced to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of travellers.
People have been advised to avoid travelling on Mughal Road until the road is cleared of snow and declared passable by the authorities. Snow clearance operations will be taken up once weather conditions improve, officials said.
According to MeT official, from January 2-5, there will generally be dry weather.
“On January 6, the weather will be generally cloudy with possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches of North & Central Kashmir,” he said.
The weather from January 7-15 would be partly cloudy
“Overall no major Western disturbances are expected till 20th January as per extended range forecast except few feeble WDs,” the MeT official said.
Meanwhile, minimum night temperatures remained above normal at many places.
Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir at –5.5°C.
