Srinagar, Jan 22: The strong gusty winds affected several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday night causing widespread damage across parts of north, south and central Kashmir.
A sudden spell of strong winds hit several areas of central, North and south Kashmir in the late evening.
The affected areas include Gulab Daji, Bernar, Malwah, Obera and Kharpora, where high speed gusts led to the blowing away of roofs of a number of houses.
In many areas, boundary walls and parts of residential structures collapsed due to the intensity of the winds.
The sudden weather disturbance created panic as many families rushed out of their homes fearing damage as debris was scattered across residential areas.
Locals said household belongings were damaged after roofs were ripped off and walls gave way under pressure from the winds.
Inhabitants of the affected areas have urged the authorities to carry out an immediate assessment of the damage and provide necessary assistance to families whose homes were damaged.
Independent weather forecaster said various areas across the Union Territory reported strong gusty winds, which are uncommon for this time of the season.
It stated that the winds are neither localised nor driven by temperature variations, but are linked to a unique and powerful Western Disturbance carrying intense wind fields within the system itself.
“Gusty winds may subside in a few areas over the coming hours; however, many places are likely to continue experiencing strong winds till the early morning hours tomorrow,” it said.
Due to the strong pressure gradients with this western disturbance extremely strong gusty winds blowing currently across valley people were advised to stay indoors and stay safe
Meanwhile, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) issued a safety advisory, cautioning residents about possible temporary power disruptions due to the strong winds.
In a post on X, KPDCL said that power supply in some areas may be affected as a precautionary measure. The power utility advised people to stay away from loose or hanging electric wires, avoid touching electric poles, transformers or fallen power lines, and keep electrical appliances unplugged during voltage fluctuations.
KPDCL said its teams are on alert and restoration of power supply will be taken up on priority once weather conditions improve, urging the public to cooperate and remain cautious.
