In a significant move to prevent SIM card misuse and enhance public safety, Handwara Police carried out a district-wide inspection of SIM card vendors to ensure strict adherence to regulatory guidelines.
A police spokesperson said that special teams were deployed to check whether vendors were complying with the Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and documentation processes mandated by the Department of Telecommunications. The exercise, officials added, is part of an effort to curb fraudulent practices and guarantee that SIM cards are issued only after thorough verification.
During the inspection, vendors were reminded of mandatory requirements, including biometric Aadhaar verification for both customers and vendors, the physical presence of customers during issuance, activation only after alternate number confirmation, prohibition on pre-activated SIMs, installation of CCTV systems at outlets, and maintenance of electronic billing.
Police also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to SIM card sales or usage. “This collaborative effort is aimed at strengthening security measures and ensuring the safety of citizens,” the spokesperson said.
The campaign is expected to continue in coming weeks with random checks to enforce compliance and deter violations.
