In Sanatan Dharma, each day of the week is dedicated to a particular deity, and Tuesday is considered sacred to Lord Hanuman, the ardent devotee of Lord Shri Ram. Hanuman Jayanti, also known as Hanuman Janmotsav, is celebrated every year on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra with great devotion and enthusiasm. This year, the auspicious festival falls on April 2.

It is called Hanuman Janmotsav rather than merely a birth anniversary because of the belief that Lord Hanuman is still present on Earth and continues to assist his devotees. According to scriptures, when Hanuman exemplified unparalleled devotion, service, and surrender towards Lord Ram, Goddess Sita blessed him with immortality. Hence, he is regarded as Chiranjivi (immortal), and his birth is celebrated with deep reverence. This festival is not just a religious observance but a symbol of cultural consciousness and faith. It reminds us of the triumph of righteousness and justice, inspiring people to follow the path of truth, service, and dedication.
It is believed that Lord Shri Ram was born around 5114 BCE in Ayodhya, and Hanuman was born prior to him so that he could serve him devotedly. Lord Hanuman is one of the most revered and widely worshipped deities in Hinduism. His worship is not limited to India but extends to Hindu communities across the world. He is considered the deity of Kaliyuga, who is easily pleased. It is believed that sincere worship of Hanuman removes obstacles, grants good health, and fills life with positive energy. Worship on Tuesdays and Saturdays is considered especially fruitful, and recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa holds special significance.
The Hanuman Chalisa was composed in the 16th century by the great saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas and remains a cornerstone of devotion for millions. It beautifully describes Hanuman’s virtues, strength, devotion, and miraculous deeds. It is believed that reciting it helps dispel fear and sorrow while bringing peace of mind. According to mythological accounts, Lord Hanuman was born in the Treta Yuga, when Lord Vishnu incarnated as Shri Ram. Lord Shiva took the form of Hanuman as a Rudra avatar to serve Lord Ram. Texts like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various Puranas describe his valor, devotion, and service in detail. Born to Mother Anjana and Vanara king Kesari, Hanuman possessed extraordinary powers from birth. He had the privilege of learning from the Sun God and was blessed by various deities with immense strength and divine abilities. He is said to possess the Ashta Siddhis and Nav Nidhis, making him invincible and supremely powerful.
The greatest testimony of Hanuman’s devotion and strength is found in the Ramayana—when he crossed the ocean in search of Goddess Sita, set Lanka ablaze, and brought the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshman’s life. His dedication, courage, and sacrifice are unparalleled. He is not only a mighty warrior but also an embodiment of wisdom and humility. Known as Sankatmochan (remover of troubles), Hanuman rescues his devotees from all forms of distress, fear, and suffering. It is believed that those who worship him with true devotion overcome all obstacles and achieve success in life.
There is also an interesting story behind his name. In Sanskrit, Hanu means jaw. As a child, when Hanuman felt hungry, he mistook the rising sun for a ripe fruit and leaped to swallow it. At that moment, Rahu was approaching the sun for an eclipse, but Hanuman drove him away and swallowed the sun, plunging the world into darkness. Rahu complained to the gods, and Indra, angered by Hanuman’s act, struck him with his thunderbolt, injuring his jaw and rendering him unconscious. When the wind god Vayu learned of this, he withdrew air from the universe, causing chaos. The gods, led by Brahma, then pacified Vayu and revived Hanuman, granting him immense powers. This event is commemorated as Hanuman Janmotsav.
Hanuman’s character is a timeless source of inspiration. He represents the perfect blend of strength, service, devotion, and humility. His life teaches that power must always be used for righteousness and service. He symbolizes fearlessness and selfless dedication. Devotees believe that worshipping Hanuman leads to success in all spheres of life. In today’s world, which faces numerous challenges, the message of Hanuman Janmotsav inspires us to move forward with strength, courage, and determination. His devotion and sense of duty should guide every individual to fulfill their responsibilities with sincerity and contribute to society and the nation. Hanuman Janmotsav is not just a religious festival—it is a celebration of cultural awareness, social unity, and spiritual energy.
