Hazrat Khwaja Moin-ud-Din Chishti: Life and Teachings

December 28, 2025 | Shafaat Ahmad Wani

Hazrat Khwaja Moin-ud-Din Chishti Rahmatullah Alaihi, also known as Sultan-ul-Hind, Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, is one of the great Sufi saints of the Indian subcontinent. He was born in 1141 AD in the city of Sistan in Iran (which was then called Sanjar near Khorasan). His full name was Moin-ud-Din Hasan Chishti Sanjari. His lineage is traced back to the Hasani and Hussaini Sadats, meaning he belonged to the family of Hazrat Ali Karamullah Wajjo and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). His father Syed Ghiyasuddin and mother Bibi Mah Noor were both very pious and influential personalities.

Early Life and Beginning of Spiritual Journey
A turning point came in the early life of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz. When he was fifteen years old, his parents died. He inherited a garden and a water mill, from which he made a living. One day, he was watering his garden when an elderly dervish, Sheikh Ibrahim Qanduzi, came to his garden. Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti welcomed him with great devotion and served him. The company of this elder revolutionized his life. He received spiritual education from him and abandoned all worldly wealth and pleasures in the path of Allah and took the path of spirituality.
After that, he travelled to academic centres like Samarkand and Bukhara to acquire knowledge, where he memorized the Holy Quran and mastered tafsir, jurisprudence, hadith and other external sciences. Then, he swore allegiance to the famous Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Usman Haruni (may Allah have mercy on him) in Baghdad and became his disciple. He spent many years in the service of his mentor and received spiritual grace from him.
Migration to India and stay in Ajmer
It is said that one night Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti had a dream in which the Holy Prophet (PBUH) ordered him to go to India. In compliance with this order, he took permission from his mentor and set off for India. He reached Ajmer (present-day Rajasthan, India) via Lahore, Multan and Delhi along with 40 companions. At that time, Prithviraj Chauhan was ruling Ajmer.
Khwaja Garib Nawaz made Ajmer the centre of his preaching. His miracles and spirituality began to attract people to him. In his teachings, he emphasized love, peace, brotherhood and service to humanity. He said: "The best worship is to help someone in distress, to fulfill the needs of someone helpless, and to feed someone hungry." The effect of his teachings was that a large number of Hindus began to accept Islam at his hands. Many such incidents are found in books like Seer-ul-Aqtab, in which there is also a mention of a priest named "Shaadi Dev" becoming a Muslim.
Famous Incidents
* Pond Water and Cup: A famous incident is that some people in Ajmer were jealous of Khwaja Sahib's growing popularity. When there was a shortage of water, they forbade Khwaja Sahib from taking water from a pond. On this, Khwaja Sahib ordered a cup and when that cup was put in the pond, all the water from the pond gathered in this cup. Seeing this, people were amazed and became convinced of his spiritual power.
* Dialogue with the priests of Raja Prithviraj: In the early days in Ajmer, Khwaja Sahib faced resistance from the local priests and government officials. When the priests of Prithviraj tried to expel him from Ajmer, he defeated them with his spiritual power. After this incident, many people were attracted towards him and accepted the truth.
His death and shrine
Khwaja Gharib Nawaz passed away on 6 Rajab 627 AH (1236 CE) in Ajmer Sharif. His holy shrine is located there, which is still a place of pilgrimage for millions of pilgrims, where his holy Urs is celebrated with devotion and respect every year.
Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti founded the Chishti order in the subcontinent and played a key role in the spread of Islam. His teachings had a profound impact on the society here and set a practical example of serving humanity. This is why he is still remembered as "Gharib Nawaz" meaning "Helper of the Poor".
These events in the life of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz not only reveal his greatness but also highlight the message of love, tolerance and service to humanity
