HC orders police protection for woman in Poonch

January 01, 2026 | BK News Service

Jammu, Dec 31: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has directed the Poonch police to ensure the safety of a woman who approached the court alleging threats related to a forced marriage.

In an order dated December 20, 2025, Justice Rahul Bharti disposed of a writ petition filed in 2023 through the petitioner’s elder sister. The petitioner had claimed she was forcibly married and feared harm from seven individuals, including members of the husband’s family. At the time of filing, she was 17 years old and has now attained majority.
The court instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch, and the Station House Officer of Mendhar Police Station to ensure the petitioner’s protection, particularly from the alleged coercion linked to the marriage and threats from respondent number four.
The High Court further stated that if the petitioner faces any future threat or harassment from respondents four to ten, she may approach the SSP, who is required to immediately investigate and ensure her safety.
With these directions, the writ petition was formally disposed of.
