Srinagar, June 12: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality patient care across Jammu and Kashmir during her visit to healthcare facilities in Khanyar and Hazratbal constituencies.
Accompanied by MLA Khanyar Ali Mohammad Sagar and MLA Hazratbal Salman Ali Sagar, the Minister undertook a detailed inspection of key medical institutions and ongoing development works.
At the Urban Public Health Centre (UPHC), S.R. Gunj, she reviewed upgradation works and directed officials to expedite completion of remaining tasks, including rooftop construction, approach road and lift installation, to make the facility operational at the earliest. She noted that the centre has been designed while preserving local heritage and will significantly improve healthcare access for residents.
At Gousia Hospital, Khanyar, the Minister announced plans for an additional block to address space constraints and parking issues. She instructed officials to complete formalities and prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) without delay.
During her visit to Sub-District Hospital (SDH), Habbak Chowk, Hazratbal, she announced that work on the approved 50-bedded hospital block will begin soon, expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for approving the project and acknowledging the efforts of local MLA Salman Ali Sagar.
The Minister said the government is focused on improving healthcare delivery, especially for economically weaker sections, so that people are not forced to rely on private hospitals for quality treatment. She informed that around 400 new doctors are being deployed across Jammu and Kashmir to address staff shortages.
“Our objective is to provide accessible, affordable and quality healthcare to every citizen,” she said, adding that ongoing gaps in the system are being systematically addressed.
She also directed authorities at Burzahama to identify land for a Primary Health Centre (PHC) to cater to local healthcare needs.
During the visit, several public delegations met the Minister and raised their concerns, which she assured would be addressed on priority. Senior officers from multiple departments accompanied her during the tour.
