With the Valley under the grip of heat wave, the District Magistrate Srinagar on Monday issued an advisory warning of rising temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar district.
The advisory issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) urged the public to take necessary precautions to safeguard against heat-related illnesses. The advisory has issued Do’s and Don’ts and asked people to follow the advisory.
People have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure between 12 noon and 3 pm, and wear light cotton clothing.
People have been advised to consume homemade drinks such as lemon water and buttermilk, and eat seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content.
The advisory recommends avoiding alcohol, tea, and carbonated drinks, as well as stale and high-protein foods.
Employers have been asked to provide drinking water, shaded rest areas, and reschedule strenuous outdoor work to cooler morning and evening hours.
The employers have been advised to educate workers on the risks and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
Vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and individuals with medical conditions have been advised to take extra care.
The advisory also outlines symptoms of heat stress, including dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, and confusion.
It urges immediate medical attention if such symptoms occur.
People have been advised to wear thin, loose cotton garments preferably light coloured.
“Cove your head, use an umbrella, hat, cop towel and other traditional headgears during exposure to direct sunlight. Wear shoes or chappals while going out in the sun,” reads the advisory.
The public has been advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours, keep living spaces cool and ventilated, and check on vulnerable individuals regularly.
“Stay indoors/in shade as much as possible. Stay in well ventilated and cool places. Block direct sunlight and heat waves. Keep windows and curtains closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of your house. Open them up at night to let cooler air in. If going outdoors, limit your outdoor activity to cooler times of the day ie., morning and evening reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler part of the day,” reads the advisory.
