Heatwave drives Srinagar residents outdoors

May 09, 2026 | Ayaan Wani

Srinagar, May 8: As daytime temperatures continue to soar in the Valley, residents of Srinagar were seen stepping out of their homes in large numbers during the evening hours to find relief from the unusual heat conditions.

Popular city hubs such as Lal Chowk and the adjoining Ghanta Ghar Srinagar witnessed a steady rush of families, youth, and tourists who gathered to spend leisure time after sunset when temperatures became comparatively tolerable.
Ice vendors, cold drink stalls, and roadside eateries reported increased sales as people turned to chilled refreshments and ice-based treats to beat the heat and stay hydrated. Many were seen sitting along footpaths, plazas, and open areas, enjoying the evening breeze while socialising in groups.
Locals said the heatwave-like conditions during the day had made it difficult to remain indoors, prompting people to plan evening outings as a way to relax and escape rising indoor temperatures.
The bustling evening scenes once again highlighted the role of city centres like Lal Chowk and Ghanta Ghar as key social and recreational spaces in Srinagar, especially during extreme weather conditions.
