The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, particularly across several districts in Jammu division, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, said that light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely at many places on Thursday, with intense showers and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur, Jammu, and Kathua districts.
In an advisory issued by the department, people have been cautioned about the potential for flash floods in vulnerable areas, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, especially along hilly terrain and major highways. The MeT has also warned of rising water levels in rivers, streams, and local nallahs, along with possible waterlogging in some low-lying urban areas.
Dr Ahmad also stated that from July 25 to 27, the region will experience hot and humid weather conditions, although brief, scattered showers cannot be ruled out. However, from July 28 to 30, intermittent light to moderate rain with intense spells during late night or early morning hours is expected in several parts of Jammu division.
Meanwhile, intermittent rainfall continued across Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive day. Srinagar recorded 19.3 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, while Qazigund received the highest rainfall at 23.9 mm, followed by 22.1 mm in Katra.
The department has advised farmers to resume agricultural activities between July 25 and 27, when the weather is expected to stabilize temporarily.
Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain alert, especially in landslide-prone areas and near water bodies.
