Hindu Contributions to Islam

Hindu scholars have made valuable contributions to the study of Islam and Islamic history. Professor Akhtarul Wasey writes that one of the most significant achievements of Hindu intellectuals has been their research on Muslim personalities and the history of Islam. Their services in this field are numerous and deserve recognition.

Many Hindu writers expressed deep respect and admiration for Imam Husain (RA), one of the most honoured figures of early Islamic history. A large number of Hindu poets composed elegies and devotional poems in his praise. Dr Dharmendra Nath even wished to write a book on Imam Husain (RA), similar to his work on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), although he could not complete the project.
Most writings on Imam Husain (RA) are in poetic form. Some authors wrote eulogies, while others composed elegies. A considerable body of literature exists on his life, character and sacrifice.
Apart from this, Hindu scholars also made remarkable contributions to the study of Muslim rulers and dynasties in India. They wrote numerous books in Persian, Urdu, Hindi, English and several regional languages. Many important works focus on individual rulers, royal families and princely states. Their research covers not only political history but also the culture, civilisation, arts, architecture, knowledge and intellectual traditions of the Muslim period in India.
Some writers examined the influence of Islam on Indian society, while others highlighted the role of Islam in the development of Indo-Islamic civilization. Among the most important works in this field is Dr Tara Chand’s famous book The Influence of Islam on Indian Culture. Many other scholars have also produced valuable studies on this subject.
The writings of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru are also important in this regard. Both wrote extensively about Islam and Muslims and contributed to greater understanding between communities.
It is true that some Hindu scholars criticised certain Muslim rulers or raised objections regarding Islam. Although such writings may be viewed negatively, they are also part of the broader academic study of Islam and Muslim history. Scholars such as K. S. Lal and Harsh Narain produced critical works, but these too form part of the intellectual engagement with Islamic civilisation.
These facts show that many Hindus studied Islam from different perspectives. Some expressed admiration and respect, while others adopted a critical approach. Muslim scholars responded to these criticisms through academic discussion and debate. The ultimate purpose of such engagement should be to strengthen peace, mutual understanding and social harmony, and to ensure that trust between communities remains strong.
Another important aspect of Hindu contributions is their role in publishing and preserving Islamic literature. In a country like India, many Hindu scholars and publishers showed great interest in the promotion, research and dissemination of Islamic knowledge.
Literature has a direct impact on society. It can either encourage peace, understanding and moral values, or contribute to misunderstanding and conflict. Religious and scholarly literature has historically played a positive role in promoting balance, intellectual growth and social harmony.
Professor Akhtarul Wasey points out that many Hindu individuals established publishing houses dedicated to the publication of Islamic books. Among them, the most famous was Munshi Nawal Kishore, whose publishing house became one of the greatest centres of Islamic publishing in South Asia.
Nawal Kishore Press alone performed a service so remarkable that it surpassed the achievements of many institutions and even governments. It published more than five hundred books on Islam, many of which went through several editions. The press also published the newspaper Oudh Akhbar, which occupies an important place in the history of journalism.
Through its efforts in editing, calligraphy, printing and publication, the press helped preserve many Islamic texts that might otherwise have been lost after 1857, when official patronage for Islamic scholarship greatly declined. The importance of Munshi Nawal Kishore’s work is reflected in the ongoing research and seminars devoted to his contributions.
In addition to publishing houses, Hindu scholars also launched newspapers and journals. Although newspapers are generally secular in nature, many publications during the British period reflected the shared heritage of Indo-Islamic civilization. Interestingly, the first Persian newspaper in the region was published not in Iran but in Calcutta by Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a highly learned scholar who studied Islam, Hinduism and Christianity in depth. He wrote several books in Arabic and Persian, including Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhidin. He remains one of the most distinguished figures in the history of intellectual and cultural exchange in India.
Besides him, nearly one hundred newspapers and journals were established by Hindu intellectuals, including daily, weekly and monthly publications.
