Hitting the Economy

August 05, 2019 |

Just when it was looking like Kashmir will have a bumper tourist season this year, all the hopes have been dashed by the security advisory of the state government asking tourists and Amarnath pilgrims to curtail their visit and leave Kashmir as soon as possible. That this happened when the state administration was making all out efforts to promote Kashmir as a safe tourist destination and plans were afoot to meet with the ambassadors of foreign countries to convince them to remove adverse travel advisory for their citizens makes the situation all the more intriguing. Now, several countries have once again asked their citizens to desist from visiting Kashmir. With the government shutting doors to Kashmir for the visitors and the security grid claiming that there are plans of militants to carry out terror attack on Amarnath pilgrimage and tourists, hundreds of hotels and houseboats are beginning to look like ghost houses. Soon we will hear that the owners of these establishments have asked their staff to go home till situation returns to normal. The repercussions of the security advisory will be felt not just by tourism industry but other allied sectors like handicrafts and transport as well. In absence of tourists, who will be there to buy the products that are made by Kashmiri artisans? In absence of tourists, who will hire the cab of a Kashmiri driver struggling to make his ends meet? In absence of tourists, who will book the hotel rooms and houseboats? Who will take shikara ride on Dal Lake when the state administration has banned tourists from visiting Kashmir? These questions have cast a dark shadow on the prospects of tourism economy. Did the government weigh the consequences of the security advisory for the people of Kashmir who depend on tourism industry for earning their livelihood? What will happen to the thousands of shikara owners, drivers, hoteliers and their staff, restaurants and other allied businesses that have come to an abrupt halt due to the security advisory of the state administration? These are not easy questions at a time when the issues of national security take precedence over all other issues. But certainly the administration could have exercised more discretion. Already the economy of Jammu and Kashmir is lying in tatters. In absence of finances to exploit the rich natural resources of Jammu and Kashmir, the state depends on service sector like tourism to keep afloat. The security advisory has ruined this tourism season. Let’s hope it doesn’t ruin anything else!
