Honoring Kashmir’s Sufi Heritage

March 29, 2026 | Khalid Qamar

The Valley of Kashmir has, for centuries, been revered as the blessed land of Auwliya Kiram, Sufiya Kiram, Ulama, Rishis, and other luminous spiritual personalities whose lives and teachings shaped the moral, spiritual, and cultural soul of this region. These noble souls rose above the narrow boundaries of sect, class, and community, dedicating themselves to the promotion of Divine Love, human brotherhood, compassion, tolerance, justice, and the highest standards of moral excellence.

Through their wisdom, spiritual discipline, and exemplary conduct, they laid the foundations of a society rooted in peace, coexistence, and reverence for humanity. Their message was not limited to ritual or outward religiosity; rather, it sought to connect human beings with the True Creator while nurturing values that uplift the human spirit. Even today, their teachings remain a source of guidance, inspiration, and inner illumination for generations.
Among these towering spiritual luminaries stands the highly revered Hazrat Faqeer Ali Muhammad Gilkar Sahib (RA), a distinguished Sufi saint and accomplished spiritual author associated with Malaratta / Nohatta, Srinagar. He occupies a place of great honor in the spiritual and literary tradition of Kashmir. His life, teachings, and writings significantly enriched the Sufi legacy of the Valley and continue to inspire seekers of truth and spiritual refinement.
One of his most remarkable contributions is the profound spiritual treatise “Kalid-e-Ladunni” (The Key of Ladunni), authored from the depths of his personal mystical experiences, observations, and spiritual unveilings. This monumental work was not written as a conventional academic text, but as a guide for serious seekers, disciples, and travelers on the spiritual path. It is a rich and subtle composition woven with metaphor, symbolism, spiritual insight, and the language of mystical experience.
The treatise reflects states of Ishq-e-Haqiqi (True Divine Love), spiritual ecstasy, inward awakening, mystical absorption, and the deeper stations of the soul’s journey toward Divine realization. As such, it belongs to the domain of Ilm-ul-Hal — the knowledge of lived spiritual states — rather than merely Ilm-ul-Qal, or discursive and theoretical knowledge. Its meanings cannot be approached superficially, nor can it be fairly judged without the proper spiritual, intellectual, and contextual understanding required for such sacred literature.
It is therefore essential to understand that the writings and legacies of such saints are not subjects for careless commentary, ridicule, or uninformed criticism. For countless devotees, admirers, scholars, and spiritual seekers, these saints are not only historical personalities but living symbols of Kashmir’s collective spiritual memory and civilizational identity. Their teachings form an inseparable part of the Valley’s heritage of harmony, devotion, and inner wisdom.
Any disrespect — whether direct or indirect, verbal or written, explicit or suggestive — towards these revered personalities, particularly Hazrat Ali Muhammad Gilkar Sahib (RA), deeply hurts the sentiments of the people and undermines the cherished Sufi ethos that has long nurtured communal harmony and spiritual dignity in Kashmir.
At a time when misunderstanding, provocation, and reckless expression can easily disturb the moral and social fabric of society, it becomes our collective responsibility to preserve the sanctity of our saints, protect our spiritual inheritance, and ensure that such sacred personalities are remembered with the respect and reverence they rightfully deserve.
This message is being issued in the spirit of public awareness and moral responsibility by Haq Sirrah Hu Research Foundation, Srinagar, for the benefit of the wider Muslim community, devotees, and the public at large.
Note:
The public is urged to refrain from misunderstanding, distortion, or provocative propaganda. The preservation of the dignity of the saints of faith and the safeguarding of Kashmir’s spiritual heritage is a shared moral duty.
May Allah Almighty protect the honor, dignity, and reverence of the saints of faith. Ameen.
