In Praise of Patience

There are many incidents we experience on a regular basis that test this trait in us. Such as waiting for a green signal, waiting at a four-way intersection, getting stuck in a jam, or giving way to another vehicle on a narrow road.

Patience is always admired by people. One who possesses this trait earns a place in people’s hearts. Patience is a quality of a righteous person. Patience is highly esteemed in Islam. Patience is a valuable asset for those who lack power and wealth. A person who has an abundance of wealth, along with patience, is more content in life. However, a person who lacks patience, despite being wealthy, may not be as content as the person with patience. A person becomes stronger with patience. Whatever difficulties a person may face, with patience, he can handle and deal them effectively. On the other hand, a person, no matter how powerful he may be, will fail in some situations by being impatient. People with patience always manage even the serious and sensitive issues of life. It is only with patience that we can lead our lives forward. Patience always comes to our rescue when there is no hope. Life tests us in many ways. It breaks and hurts us, but with patience, we gather our strength and rise again. It prepares us not to lose hope and pulls us out of despondency, and uplifts us to carry on.

Patience plays an important role in our lives. We should be patient in our daily lives. It starts with our family. A patient person always wins the heart of others and accomplishes any task. Our patience can be tested, while waiting at a vegetable vendor for our turn. We may have experienced many times at a vegetable seller’s shop or bread shop, people are in a hurry, cut in line and take the place of those who are waiting for their turn. When a person is pushed back and chooses not to complain, calmly just giving up his turn, it does not mean he is weak and not aware of his own turn. It means he has reached a level of maturity that only a handful of people could ever reach.
There are many incidents we experience on a regular basis that test this trait in us. Such as waiting for a green signal, waiting at a four-way intersection, getting stuck in a jam, or giving way to another vehicle on a narrow road. Let me explain you, when you drive a car on a narrow road, you often notice that the impatient driver squeezes you to your side while not leaving enough space on his own. Although a person knows he has more space on his side, he may deliberately expect you to move entirely. It is only impatience and arrogance.
Sometimes drivers speed up through narrow roads despite knowing that slowing down would make it easier for other cars to pass safely. The same behaviour is seen in traffic jams, where people think others are foolish and try to move ahead recklessly, even though they know that doing so only worsens the jam and causes trouble to everyone. Some people blow a horn at red light signals, which is of no use. It reflects impatience rather than urgency. Such people fail to realise that with patience and discipline everything would run smoothly.
Let me narrate a recent incident that happened in a bank. It was lunchtime, from 2:00 to 2:30. A security guard stood at the bank’s entrance and repeatedly tried to close the door. I was there waiting. Many people came and waited for a few seconds and then left. Nobody stayed there for even a minute. Whosoever came and said, “It is only 2:10, more twenty minutes to wait. Why do they take so much time for lunch when they have nothing to do during the day?” A security guard was inside the bank. I stood at the entrance waiting. I informed everyone about the timing whosoever inquired. After twenty minutes, two young boys entered, despite knowing about the timing, made their way inside. A few people who were waiting downstairs followed them inside the bank, although they knew it was still lunchtime. A security guard quickly rushed and asked, “Who entered first?” The two boys wearing Pherans admitted it was them. The security guard took both the boys by the arms and asked them come back after 2:30. However, the two boys were reluctant to leave. A scuffle broke out, and abuses were hurled at each other. In the end, the two boys overpowered the guard.
There are many similar incidents happening nowadays. People have lost patience. The power of patience is declining in our generation. It does not make you weak and belittle your personality if you slow down your car and let another person pass safely. It does not matter if you leave more space by your side for other vehicles while giving way. At the same it does not lessen your personality to wait for your turn at a doctor’s clinic or railway station without cutting in line. Nor does it elevate you to another world if you give up your turn for someone who is in a hurry or impatient. There is no loss in stepping back.
Patience adds more value to life. Being patient is a sign of strength. Patience resolves major differences and unites rather than divides. Through patience, you can win people’s hearts and save relationships. Patience reflects calmness and composure, whereas an Impatient person appears agitated and restless. Such people are always ready to argue or fight anytime and remain unconcerned about others.
In today’s world, modern technology has weakened our level of patience. We want everything quickly. The Internet has made our lives faster than ever. We browse on internet and check as many sites as possible. We scroll endlessly, we become unconscious of ourselves, often not knowing why we began scrolling in the first place. We prefer online shopping than offline shopping to save time. We consume much information and scroll instead of reflecting. We become impatient if someone does not answer our call immediately. We get emotional and tense when our loved ones are offline and do not reply to our texts on WhatsApp.
There is not a single part of our lives where patience is not required. Let us reclaim patience in our daily lives on the roads, in queues, while waiting at hospitals, at the bread shop, in traffic jams and in our homes. By choosing patience, we choose peace, strength, and a better society.
