Srinagar, Feb 16: Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources Minister Javed Ahmed Rana announced that the completion of the Shahpur Kandi dam by March 31 will halt excess water from the Ravi River from flowing to Pakistan.
The project, a priority for drought-affected Kathua and Samba districts, will also support irrigation of over 32,000 hectares in J&K and 5,000 hectares in Punjab, generate 206 MW hydropower, and optimize water management. The dam, part of a national initiative, was revived after decades-long delays following an agreement between J&K, Punjab, and the Centre.
