Indian climbers make history with first ascents in Mt. Monto Range, Ladakh

September 19, 2025 | BK News Service

A team of 11 Indian climbers associated with a club in Bengal has created history by climbing Mt Monto group of peaks unguided and unsupported.

Mt. Monto group of peaks consist of 4 peaks and are located in South East Ladakh region near Korzok village and approx. 55 km from the roadhead (Kiyang dum) near the south end of Tso Moriri Lake.
The team lead by well known mountaineer Rudra Prasad Halder and deputy leader Satyarup Siddhanta a world record holder mountaineer earlier has climbed some real tough peaks in Indian Himalayas like Mt Brammah in Kistwar (first Indian ascent), Mt Gupt Parvat (first ascent) and Mt Indrasan in Himachal Pradesh and many more which had earned them respect in the indian mountaineering community.
Mt Monto 1 was attempted earlier by Himalayan club from the eastern face but the attempt was not successful. This route from the western face was totally virgin.
The team started with full throttle and had kept enough days in hand to not only summit the peaks but also to explore the various gorges, cols, unnamed peaks (some of which are above 6000m) to document future climbing opportunities.
But as they reached the base camp the weather turned bad which was a reflection of the disasters in Himachal and surrounding places. The team had to keep themselves inside the tent at the basecamp for almost 6 crucial days.
Since these peaks are near to the border of Himachal and China, the detailed topographic maps were not made available due to the sensitive zone. Without the detailed maps , the only way to find the route to the summit was to go and explore. The threat of missing the opportunity to climb these virgin peaks was looming karge because of the continuous snowfall.
Finally as the weather cleared up the team did some exploration in the nearby gorges which feed the main river - the Lingti river. Eventually they discovered a waterfall too. Without further delay a team of 4 went up to find the route to Monto 4 and eventually climbed pretty late in the evening to become the first in the world to climb Mt Monto 4. The team members were Satyarup Siddhanta, Naitik Naskar, Anirban Talukdar and Debasish Majumdar. They returned back to the base camp around midnight exploring another gorge while coming down. The rest of the team did an exploration of another gorge.
The very next day the rest of the team went for the summit - Rudra Prasad Halder, Soumya, Niranjan, Wrik Raj, Bhaskar and Tuhin summited while.Arunabha Sanpui had to turn back halfway.
The very next day Debasis and Naitik attempted to climb Mt Monto 3 from a route they saw while climbing Monto 4. They reached the top and their GPS matched the height of the peak documented.
The very next day Satyarup and Wrikraj went for an exploration while 4 of the team members went to open the route of Mt Monto 2. The team managed to find the technical route to the summit ridge and came back down. The very next day 9 members started for summiting Mt Monto 2 and by late afternoon the team summited. -
Rudra Prasad Halder, Satyarup Siddhanta, Naitik Naskar, Soumya, ,Wrikraj, Bhaskar and Tuhin and came back to the base camp by late evening. The height of Monto 2 was found to be 100m less than what's documented. From the top of Monto 2 Rudra Prasad saw a summit of Mt Monto 3 which was different than the one earlier climbed by Naitik.and Debasish.
The very next day, which was the last day available, Rudra, Debaish and Naitik went to attempt Mt Monto 3 through the western face and traversed around through treacherous scree zones and finally reached the true summit of Monto 3 which was higher than what was documented in the map. They became the first in the world to climb Mt Monto 3. The team came back by evening and started to dismantle the higher camps and base camps.
The very next day before the team started back, Satyarup managed to explore two more gorges.
Mt Monto 1 remained unclimbed because of bad snow conditions and not enough time was there to find the route.
Overall it was a great exploration and self supported climb without sherpa.
Incidentally the team also did a cleaning drive around the bank of Tso Moriri with some local students and also distributed some education supplies and clothes for the students. The team also brought back all the non degradable waste back to Karzok and handed over the same to the municipal garbage truck.
In an age where agency based commercial climb is ramming up, the team is showing hopes to keep alive the concept of alpine style climbing.
The team which even after climbing such big peaks struggles to get sponsors and relies on crowd funding now has bigger plans for the coming year and is determined to make the country proud by etching new history.
