Kho Kho is a traditional Indian sport, being one of the oldest outdoor sports dating back to ancient India. It is the second most popular traditional tag game in the Indian subcontinent after Kabaddi. Many historians believe that it is a modified form of 'Tag'/'Catch', which in its simplest form involves chasing and touching a person.Kho-Kho is featured in the Ancient Indian Sanskrit epic Mahabharata.
With firm belief that, ‘empowerment of women is imperative for a better tomorrow and that by empowering the women, we empower the future of the society' and in yet another step towards upliftment of Kashmiri women, Indian Army organised Inter School girls Kho-Kho tournament in Manigah, Kupwara and final was conducted on 22 Sept 22.
Total of twelve teams from different schools participated in the tournament. Teams were divided into two pools of six teams each for group stage knock out matches and in total, twelve matches were played including the final match. The final match was played between team of Upper Primary School, Shatpora and Govt High School, Tanda in which team of UPS, Shatpora emerged out as winners. Third position was secured by team of Govt Middle School, Brimbal.
All the teams participated with great zeal and the hardwork and efforts put in by them was evident from their game. Girl students were greatly supported and motivated by their school teachers throughout the tournament and it resulted in very lively and healthy participation by the schools. Top three teams were awarded with cash prizes and medals and top two teams were given the winner and runner up trophy.
Total of 144 girls participated in the tournament and the final was witnessed by 150 people other than the participants to include 70 students, 10 Teachers, 05 Sarpanches, 12 Ward Members and 51 civilians. The event culminated with prize distribution followed by refreshments for all. Event was greatly appreciated by Sarpanches, teachers and locals.
