IUST holds seminar on balancing Kashmiri tradition, modernity

The Habba Khatoon Centre for Kashmiri Language and Literature (HKCKL&L), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organized a one-day national seminar on “Sustainable Growth: Balancing Tradition and Modernity in Kashmiri Art and Culture”. The seminar, sponsored by the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), North Western Regional Centre, Chandigarh, brought together experts and participants from various regions to discuss the preservation of Kashmiri art and culture in the face of modernization.

In his keynote address, Dr. Afaq Aziz, former Professor at the CCAS, University of Kashmir, highlighted the challenges posed by globalization to Kashmiri art and heritage. He emphasized the cultural and historical significance of Kashmiri folklore, art, and landmarks such as Manasbal and Burzahom, underscoring their relevance to the region’s artistic legacy.

Prof. Abdul Wahid Makhdoomi, Registrar, IUST, stressed the importance of adopting a balanced approach that embraces modernity while preserving cultural heritage. He advocated for community-driven initiatives to safeguard Kashmiri traditions for future generations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Afroz Ahmad Bisati, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, IUST, called for focused efforts to support and promote Kashmiri artisans, recognizing their role in preserving traditional art forms. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Afshana, Coordinator, HKCKL&L.
