One day seminar on Impact of Hiring & Firing Laws held at IUST

The Department of Economics, Islamic University of Science and Technology conducted a One-day seminar on "Impact of Hiring and Firing Laws on Factor Productivity: A unit level analysis using judicial outcome index". The program was part of a larger project sponsored by Azim Premji University.
Welcoming the participants, Prof. S.M. Shafi, Head, Department of Economics, emphasized on the relevance of quality research in the realm of employment laws and appreciated the department's initiatives in conducting cutting edge economic analyses.
The keynote adress was delivered by Prof. Santosh Mehrotra, Visiting Professor, University of Bath, U.K. who emphasized on the need for addressing the issues of informality and slow employment generation in India's manufacturing sector. Prof Mehrotra underscored the relevance of employment protection laws in segmented labour markets.
Sharing the project findings, Principal Investigator of the project, Dr. Irfan Ahmad Sofi demonstrated how hiring and firing laws affect the dynamics of the labour market particularly that of the factor productivity growth in industrial business, and emphasized that the new labour codes introduced by the central Government will foster a conducive environment for industrial development and boost the industrial growth and employment generation in the economy. The program was coordinated by Dr.Mehak.
