In a significant push for infrastructure and environmental resilience in North Kashmir's Uri region, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology, Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, today laid foundation stones for two major projects – Erosion and Flood Protection Works at Boniyar and a comprehensive Water Supply Scheme (WSS) under AMRUT 2.0 in Uri town.
The ₹18.57 crore Erosion and Flood Protection project, sanctioned under the Comprehensive Flood Management Programme (CFMP), aims to safeguard critical stretches of the River Jhelum from RD 180 km to 225 km, areas highly vulnerable to erosion and seasonal flooding.
The initiative includes the construction of RCC retaining walls and crate protection structures, with a completion target of eight months. The project is expected to benefit dozens of villages by protecting lives, agricultural land, and property.
“These projects reflect the Omar Abdullah government’s commitment to proactive flood management and environmental protection,” said Minister Rana. “They address immediate threats and enhance long-term resilience of the region.”
₹6.71 Cr Water Supply Scheme to Ensure Potable Water
In another major step, Rana also laid the foundation stone for the Uri town Water Supply
The scheme is designed to supply 135 litres per capita per day, ensuring 100% potable water coverage in Uri town and meeting both current and future needs.
“This project is a transformative step towards improving public health, infrastructure and service delivery, especially in remote and underserved areas,” Rana stated.
The events were attended by MLA Uri Dr. Sajad Shafi, Chief Engineer PHE Kashmir Er. Taj Choudhary, and senior officials of the Jal Shakti Department.
Later, the Minister held public grievance meetings at Peernia Playground in Boniyar and Officers’ Club in Uri. Residents raised issues such as damaged roads, water supply challenges, and the need for better educational facilities.
Rana assured locals that their concerns would be addressed on priority. “The Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to responsive governance where development reaches every doorstep, and grievances are resolved swiftly,” he said.
He urged officials to ensure timely implementation of flagship and centrally sponsored schemes and conduct regular field visits, particularly in remote areas.
Concluding his visit, Rana reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bridging development gaps in remote regions through sustained infrastructure investment and improved public service delivery.
