Jawahar Nagar–Budshahi Bagh road in disrepair

Commuters demand immediate repairs

August 22, 2025 | Muhammad Daanish

The once well-planned and scenic route from Jawahar Nagar to Budshahi Bagh in Srinagar, iconic for its lush surroundings and orderly layout, has deteriorated significantly—leaving residents and commuters frustrated and calling for urgent action.
Nestled along the banks of the Jhelum River, Jawahar Nagar is one of Srinagar’s premier residential zones, known for its wide roads, parks, and government-planned structure. The neighborhood also stood as one of the most affected areas during the 2014 floods, which submerged the locality under water for nearly 25 days due to its low elevation near the river
Yet today, the road stretching toward the Budshahi Bridge, a critical link near the Civil Secretariat, lies riddled with potholes, cracked tarmac, and uneven surfaces. Drivers describe the experience as akin to navigating a “labyrinth of craters,” risking vehicle damage and traffic accidents.
This road’s current condition is symptomatic of a wider issue in Srinagar, where poor road maintenance and delays in repair are becoming the norm. Despite prior promises, many roads remain neglected—forcing commuters to take treacherous detours or endure long, risky journeys .
Vehicle damage and increased accident risk due to slippery and uneven surfaces
Slowed traffic flow, affecting daily commuters, rickshaws, and public vehicles
Decline in civic pride, as a once reliable route now symbolizes administrative neglect
Residents argue that Jawahar Nagar represents the very essence of civic orderliness in the city—repairing the road promptly would reaffirm that ideal and restore confidence in local governance.
