Srinagar, Jan 21: Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for rain and snow as two Western Disturbances are likely to hit the Union Territory from January 22.
As per the advisory released by the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, based on forecasts from the Meteorological Department, the first weather system is likely to remain active from January 22 to 24, with January 23 expected to witness the most intense conditions.
The second WD disturbance is likely to affect the region from night of January 26 till January 28, peaking on January 27.
According to the advisory, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall is expected across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, while isolated areas may experience heavy precipitation, particularly during peak activity.
During the first spell, areas along the Pir Panjal range, the Chenab Valley, and the middle to higher reaches of South Kashmir including Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam and Shopian—are likely to receive heavy rain or snowfall.
Other sensitive zones include Pir Ki Gali, Gulmarg, Sonamarg–Zojila stretch, Razdan Pass, Sadhna Pass, and districts such as Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Kishtwar and Ramban.
The second weather system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall over similar regions, especially the Pir Panjal range and higher elevations of South Kashmir.
Authorities have warned that the prevailing weather conditions could disrupt road and air connectivity, including traffic on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway and other key routes in the upper reaches. Tourists, commuters and transport operators have been advised to plan their travel cautiously.
People have been asked to remain vigilant, follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel to higher altitudes and keep essential supplies ready.
Locals have been eagerly waiting for snowfall as the winter so far has remained largely dry.
Meanwhile, the night temperatures across Kashmir remained below freezing at several places.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.4°C last night, compared to minus 3.4°C the preceding night.
In Qazigund, the night temperature settled at minus 3.3°C, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 3.8°C while in Kupwara night temperature settled at minus 3.0°C.
Colder conditions prevailed in the higher reaches, with the ski resort of Gulmarg recording minus 5.0°C, Pulwama minus 4.9°C, and Shopian and Sonamarg both at minus 5.5°C.
