Srinagar, Sep 2: Jammu and Kashmir recorded zero terrorism-related incidents in August, making it the second month this year to pass without terror violence, according to official data compiled by the J&K Police.

The data shows that August witnessed no terrorism-related incident, civilian killing, security-force fatality or terrorist fatality. June was the first month of 2026 to record zero terror-related violence in the Union Territory.
The achievement came despite a series of security alerts and preventive operations across vulnerable areas. Security forces maintained heightened surveillance following suspected drone movements, reports of suspicious activity and recoveries of arms, ammunition and explosives from suspected hideouts.
On August 23, a suspected Pakistan-origin drone was spotted over forward villages in Kathua’s Hiranagar sector. Forces immediately launched searches but found no weapons, narcotics or other objectionable material. Another suspected drone was detected in Poonch’s Mendhar sector on August 28, triggering intensified surveillance.
An unusual incident was also reported from Hiranagar after a pigeon found in Chhan Khatriyan village was carrying a leg ring bearing what appeared to be a Pakistani mobile number. Police took the bird into custody for verification, but found no incriminating material or message, and no espionage angle was established.
Meanwhile, security forces continued intelligence-led operations against suspected terror networks. In Surankote, Poonch, forces recovered rifle magazines and ammunition from a suspected hideout on August 5. Another hideout busted on August 15 yielded six improvised explosive devices, a wireless set and AK-47 ammunition.
In Sopore, Baramulla, forces later recovered an AK-47 rifle, magazines, ammunition and hand grenades from an abandoned house. Suspected terror associates were also apprehended in separate operations across Kashmir.
Officials cautioned that the decline in violence should not lead to complacency, stressing that the security grid would maintain strict surveillance, strengthen intelligence gathering and respond swiftly to suspicious activity.
The month also saw the peaceful conclusion of the 57-day Amarnath Yatra, which began on July 3 and formally concluded on August 28. More than 4.8 lakh pilgrims performed darshan during the 2026 pilgrimage.
The yatra was temporarily suspended from August 9 after heavy rains damaged vulnerable stretches of the routes, but restoration work enabled the pilgrimage to resume and conclude without any reported terror incident.
The twin developments—zero terror violence and a peaceful Amarnath Yatra—mark a significant boost for J&K’s security environment. Yet, the recovery of weapons and repeated alerts underline that while violence has declined sharply, vigilance remains the strongest shield for peace.
