Srinagar, Sep 14: The Jammu and Kashmir SnowShoe Association has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the winter sport across the Union Territory, develop Gulmarg as a flagship racing destination and seek hosting rights for the 11th National SnowShoe Championship 2027 at Sonamarg.

The roadmap was finalised at the Association’s Annual General Meeting in Srinagar, chaired by President Tariq Ghani, where members reviewed the previous season and discussed plans to increase participation, improve competitive standards and integrate SnowShoe racing with winter tourism.
J&K hosted the 10th National SnowShoe Championship at Sonamarg in February, attracting athletes from 20 States and Union Territories, with the hosts emerging overall champions. The Association also organised the inaugural Gulmarg 5K SnowShoe Race, which drew more than 70 endurance athletes.
The Association plans to develop the Gulmarg 5K into an annual national-level event and organise more races at Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri and Poonch/Bhaderwah, depending on snow conditions.
It also plans closer coordination with the J&K Tourism Department to promote SnowShoe as a winter tourism and adventure activity.
A national coaching camp has been proposed in Srinagar from October 7 to 10, with around 25 shortlisted athletes expected to participate under coach Tahir Ahmad Mir.
The Association will also begin preparations for the selection of J&K athletes for the 2027 World SnowShoe Championship in Italy, subject to fitness, documentation, funding, visa and other logistical requirements.
Limited availability of SnowShoe equipment remains a major challenge. The Association plans to seek government support for procuring both competitive racing equipment and recreational SnowShoes for tourists and beginners.
It said wider equipment availability could help establish J&K as a major SnowShoeing hub in India.
The Association also said it would formally approach the Tourism Department for hosting the 11th National Championship at Sonamarg, which has hosted the last three editions.
With expanding competitions, athlete training, equipment access and tourism integration, the Association aims to position J&K as a leading destination for SnowShoe sport in the country.
