A delegation of the J&K SnowShoe Association, led by its President Tariq Ghani, called on the J&K Sports Minister, Satish Sharma, at the Civil Secretariat Srinagar to discuss the growth and future roadmap of SnowShoe running as a winter sport in Jammu & Kashmir.
The delegation comprised Vice President Arif Ahmad, General Secretary Dr. Altaf-ur-Rehman, and International SnowShoe athletes Gulzar Khan and Muzamil Hussain, who have represented India on global platforms.
During the interaction, President Tariq Ghani briefed the Minister on the rising popularity and accessibility of SnowShoe running in J&K and the consistent dominance of J&K athletes at both National and International SnowShoe events. The sport’s significant potential to boost winter tourism without the need for major infrastructure or expensive equipment. The role of SnowShoe in promoting inclusive winter sporting opportunities across remote snow-bound areas
Ghani also requested the Minister to re-include SnowShoe in the Khelo India Winter Games, noting that it was an official sport in the first three editions and featured as a demo sport in the 5th edition.
“SnowShoe running is one of the most accessible and cost-effective winter sports. It requires no specialised infrastructure and can be conducted anywhere there is snow. J&K athletes have already proven their mettle internationally, and with renewed support, we can further consolidate J&K’s leadership in this sport,” said President Tariq Ghani.
The delegation informed the Minister that, Gulmarg is set to host the 10th National SnowShoe Championship this winter. The Association is planning to organise a Guinness World Record SnowShoe Run in Gulmarg, aiming to draw national and international attention.
Sports Minister Satish Sharma appreciated the achievements of international athletes Gulzar Khan and Muzamil Hussain, congratulating them for bringing recognition to India and J&K.
“Our athletes have shown exceptional commitment and talent in SnowShoe events across the world. The government stands committed to supporting them in upcoming international competitions, including the event scheduled in Italy,” the Minister said.
He also expressed satisfaction that last year’s National SnowShoe Championship was successfully held in Sonamarg, proving that the discipline is adaptable to various snow destinations within the Union Territory.
“SnowShoe is truly an all-destination winter sport. We are working to make J&K the winter sports hub of India, and SnowShoe aligns perfectly with that vision. I will ensure that SnowShoe finds its rightful place again in the Khelo India Winter Games and receives full support across all regions of J&K,” Sharma added.
The meeting concluded with the delegation presenting a memento of appreciation to the Sports Minister on behalf of the SnowShoe Federation of India, acknowledging his continued encouragement for winter sports development in the region.
