The J&K Democratic Women’s Association has strongly condemned the reported incident in which the attire of a female doctor was interfered with during a public function, terming the act a serious violation of a woman’s dignity, personal liberty, and constitutional rights.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Vice President of the Association expressed grave concern over the incident, stating that any interference with a woman’s attire—irrespective of intent—amounts to an assault on her bodily autonomy and individuality. The Association said such actions undermine the values of equality, respect, and democratic ethics enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Citing constitutional provisions, the Association pointed out that Article 21 guarantees the right to life with dignity, Articles 14 and 15 ensure equality and prohibit discrimination, while Article 25 protects freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess and practice one’s religion. It said any public act that intrudes upon a woman’s personal choice or religious expression violates constitutional morality and the rule of law.
The statement further emphasized that individuals holding constitutional or public office are bound by a higher standard of conduct and must exhibit restraint, sensitivity, and respect for fundamental rights. “Public interference with a woman’s attire not only demeans her dignity but also normalises coercion and humiliation, setting a dangerous precedent in society,” it said.
Reiterating that women’s dignity is inviolable and non-negotiable, the J&K Democratic Women’s Association demanded accountability in accordance with constitutional principles. The Association also called for an unequivocal public apology, stating that such a step is essential to reaffirm commitment to gender justice, democratic values, and respect for the rule of law.
