Journalist injured as tree falls on motorcycle in Tangmarg

May 15, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Baramulla, May 14: A journalist was injured on Thursday after a sudden tree collapse near a madrasa in the Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, triggering panic among locals and prompting swift rescue efforts.

The injured has been identified as Ubaid Malik, who is currently associated with Early Times newspaper. According to eyewitnesses, Malik was passing through the area on his motorcycle when a roadside tree unexpectedly uprooted and fell directly onto his two-wheeler. The impact caused him to lose control and fall onto the road, resulting in injuries.
Locals present at the scene immediately rushed to his aid and removed him from beneath the fallen branches. He was subsequently shifted to a nearby healthcare facility for treatment. Hospital sources said his condition is stable and he is out of danger, though he sustained injuries in the incident.
Following the incident, police reached the spot and initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the tree fall. Preliminary observations suggest that the tree may have weakened due to age or environmental factors, though officials have not issued an official confirmation yet.
Authorities later removed the fallen tree from the roadway to restore traffic movement and ensure safety for commuters. The incident caused brief disruption in vehicular movement in the area before normalcy was restored.
No other casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious in areas with old or unstable trees, especially during changing weather conditions.
