Jammu and Kashmir’s democracy is still in the process of steadying itself after the abrogation of Article 370. The least one expects from our elected representatives is a sense of responsibility, sobriety, and maturity in public conduct. Yet Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has acted in the very opposite manner which can only be described as recklessness bordering on irresponsibility. His X post accusing the Legislative Assembly Secretariat and the ruling National Conference of “endorsing” the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Din Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA) is nothing short of juvenile mischief. The Assembly Secretariat did not endorse anything. It merely fulfilled a statutory duty by publishing a bulletin to notify other members of Malik’s detention in compliance with Rule 260 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business. The Secretariat has no role in deciding who is detained or released. For Para to twist a routine, legally mandated procedure into a narrative of institutional betrayal is not only dishonest but corrosive to the dignity of the legislature itself. Para’s words—“Shameful surrender. Assembly Secretariat endorsing PSA against an elected MLA is a direct assault on democracy”—are not just factually wrong but they are dangerously misleading. By suggesting that the Secretariat was complicit in silencing legislators, he attempted to delegitimize an institution that must remain above partisan squabbles. Worse still, his warning—“today it’s Mehraj, tomorrow it could be you”—was pure fear-mongering, designed to inflame rather than inform. This is not the language of a responsible lawmaker. This is the rhetoric of a street agitator who thrives on noise but shuns the discipline of democratic procedure. If Para truly wished to challenge Malik’s detention, he had ample constitutional avenues—raising the matter on the floor of the Assembly, questioning the government, or moving a motion. Instead, he chose the lazy theatrics of Twitter where sound bites are traded for substance. The Assembly Secretariat’s decision to serve him a show cause notice is both justified and necessary. Institutions cannot be held hostage to the whims of grandstanding politicians. If every MLA were to misrepresent routine procedures as conspiracies, the very fabric of the legislature would start to unravel. Para must understand that democracy is not strengthened by reckless accusations and social media tantrums. It is strengthened by knowledge of procedure, respect for institutions, and the courage to debate within the House. His conduct has shown contempt for all three. Jammu and Kashmir deserves legislators, not headline-chasers. Para’s juvenile politics has not only embarrassed his party but also insulted the very Assembly he is sworn to uphold. If he cannot distinguish between duty and drama, perhaps he should reconsider whether he is fit to occupy a lawmaker’s chair at all.
