Kashmir Has Become Safer: US Ambassador Signals Possible Review of Travel Advisory

August 19, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, August 19: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has indicated that Washington may reconsider its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, citing improvements in the region’s security situation.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar on Wednesday, Gor said the United States regularly reviews its travel advisories and that the existing guidance for Jammu and Kashmir could be examined.

“I can’t make any big announcement here today, but it is something we are going to look at,” Gor said.

The US envoy said the Chief Minister and the Government of India had taken significant steps towards improving safety in the region. He also said Kashmir’s natural beauty could encourage more Americans to visit.

“I think a lot of Americans would enjoy coming here and see the beauty that exists here,” Gor said.

Gor described his meeting with Omar Abdullah as “very good” and said the discussions would be followed by further engagement, with some matters to be taken back to Washington.

Omar also termed the meeting positive, saying the talks covered India-US relations and focused particularly on areas where Washington could contribute to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister referred to certain “legacy issues” that he said would require continued efforts to resolve.

Omar expressed hope that engagement between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States would expand and deepen in the years ahead.

Any change in the existing US travel advisory could potentially encourage more American tourists to visit Kashmir and indicate a shift in Washington’s assessment of the security situation in the region.
