Kashmir markets witness subdued rush

March 20, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, March 19: Markets across the Kashmir Valley are witnessing a subdued rush this Eid-ul-Fitr, as unseasonal rainfall and the ongoing geopolitical tensions in Iran impact shopping activity. Traders report lower footfall compared to previous years, with the wet weather dampening the festive spirit and bringing an unexpected chill.

Over the past week, temperatures in the region have dropped to around 10°C from the 20°C recorded in February, adding to shoppers’ reluctance to visit central markets. “With the rain, people prefer shopping in their local areas rather than coming down to Lalchowk and other city markets,” said Ghulam Ahmad Kumar, an elderly resident.
City centre Lalchowk, along with nearby markets such as Goni Khan, Maharaj Bazar, and downtown Srinagar, typically sees a surge in activity on the eve of Eid, with shoppers buying garments, bakery items, mutton, and other essentials. However, this year, the bustle is noticeably missing.
“Trade has been hit due to erratic weather and ongoing international tensions, particularly the Iran war,” said Javaid Ahmad Dar, a shopkeeper in Goni Khan. Rohit, a garment retailer in the city, added that shoppers are confused about purchasing warm or summer clothing due to the fluctuating temperatures. Rising inflation has also affected purchasing power, he noted.
According to Qazi Tauseef, a leader of the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), traders had estimated a turnover of around Rs 25 crore during previous Eid eves. This year, however, turnover is expected to be significantly lower, at approximately Rs 15 crore. Bakery items and mutton remain the top purchases, followed by household goods and garments.
Traders hope that despite the muted start, shoppers will continue to make essential purchases, but acknowledge that external factors such as weather and global tensions have inevitably tempered the festive cheer.
