The upper reaches of the Valley along with some plains including south Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall on Thursday.
A MeT official said tourist resorts of Pahalgam and Sonamarg, Zojila axis, upper areas in Budgam, Gurez, Bandipora, Ganderbal, and other places received snowfall early in the morning.
“Plains of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama and Baramulla also received light snowfall,” he said.
The outskirts of Srinagar including Pantha Chowk, Zewan and adjoining areas also received snowfall while other areas received rain.
A MeT official said the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with the possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches can't be ruled out from January 17 to 19.
“Overall, there is nothing significant till January 18”, he said.
The official said another spell of light snowfall is expected at isolated to scattered locations on January 20 and 21.
The MeT has also predicted light rain in the plains of Jammu and snowfall scattered to fairly widespread locations in the Valley on January 22.
Meanwhile, owing to overcast conditions, the minimum temperatures across the Valley increased but remained below freezing point.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius while the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius while minimum temperature settled at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius in Qazigund.
Meanwhile, train services from Banihal town to Baramulla town of the Valley were suspended on Thursday due to fresh snowfall on the track.
Railway officials said the train service will be resumed once the tracks are cleared of accumulated snow.
Kashmir is currently in the grip of “Chillai-Kalan” — the harshest period of winter.
During the 40 days of “Chillai-Kalan”, which began on December 21, the chances of snowfall are the highest and the temperature drops considerably.
“Chillai-Kalan” ends on January 31 and is followed by a 20-day “Chillai-Khurd” (small cold) and then a 10-day “Chillai-Bachha” (baby cold).
Meanwhile, Bhaderwah valley in Doda district received a fresh spell of snowfall on Thursday, as did the adjacent region of Bhalessa which was blanketed in pristine white.
Poonch, too, was freshly covered in snow.
Following the restoration of the Bhaderwah-Basholi-Pathankot National Highway, a large number of tourists thronged to Bhaderwah region of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the Guldanda meadow, after it received heavy snowfall earlier in January.
Guldanda, which is located at almost 10,000 feet altitude, has become a popular destination for visitors from across the country. In the past year, over 5 lakh tourists visited various parts of Bhaderwah, according to the Publicity Officer of the Bhaderwah Development Authority (BDA), Aamir Rafique.
