January 27, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, Jan 26: The 77th Republic Day was marked across the Kashmir Valley with visible enthusiasm and patriotic spirit, as residents and institutions celebrated the nation’s constitutional milestone with pride and zest. The day’s events reflected a strong sense of national identity and community participation, resonating deeply with many Kashmiris regardless of the chilly winter weather.

Official functions held across the region, including the main Republic Day programme at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, drew crowds despite heightened security measures. The event featured an impressive march-past by contingents from Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, NCC cadets and school students, who saluted the National Flag and reaffirmed their commitment to the nation’s ideals. Cultural performances by local artists added vibrant colour to the celebrations, showcasing the Valley’s rich heritage alongside patriotic fervour.
Across districts such as Budgam and other parts of the Kashmir division, Republic Day functions were held with comparable zeal. Flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and public gatherings brought citizens together to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters and celebrate the values enshrined in the Constitution. Speakers at these functions paid tribute to the nation’s democratic journey, urging attendees to uphold unity, liberty, and justice in their daily lives.
For many Kashmiris, the day was not just about official protocols; it was an emotional affirmation of belonging to the larger national fabric. From cultural tableaux and music performances to families observing the flag with pride, the celebrations brought alive a collective spirit of patriotism. Social media and on-ground reports pointed to moments of personal expression as well, with citizens engaging in flag hoisting and patriotic rituals in their neighbourhoods, reflecting a broader sense of inclusion in the national narrative.
While security remained a priority to ensure peaceful observance, residents’ applause, active participation and prideful chants throughout the day underscored how Republic Day continues to resonate as a unifying occasion, reaffirming Kashmir’s place in India’s democratic tradition.
