Temperatures across the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region have dropped significantly, signaling the onset of colder winter conditions. At popular hill stations, Pahalgam recorded a minimum of –3.8°C, while Gulmarg registered 0.5°C, indicating early frost in higher altitudes. In the Jammu region, Jammu city saw a low of 10.2°C, Katra 9.5°C, Batote 2.9°C, and Bhaderwah 1°C.
Officials from the Meteorological (MeT) Department said the minimum temperatures are expected to fall further in the coming days, especially in the Valley, with cold waves likely to intensify. The weather office predicted dry conditions from November 13 to 15, partly cloudy skies on November 16, and another spell of dry weather from November 17 to 19, offering little respite from the cold.
Doctors in Kashmir have advised the elderly, children, and people with chronic respiratory or chest ailments to take precautions against prolonged exposure to the cold. They stressed the importance of warm clothing, adequate hydration, and avoiding early morning or late-night outings.
The drop in temperature comes ahead of the Valley’s 40-day period of intense winter, known as Chillai Kalan, which begins on December 21 and continues until January 30. During this period, temperatures often fall below freezing, water sources may freeze, and residents typically prepare for harsher winter conditions. Authorities have also urged people to ensure proper heating arrangements and safeguard livestock and poultry from the severe cold.
The MeT Department has warned that cold waves may affect daily life, particularly in higher-altitude areas, and advised commuters and tourists to plan travel carefully, as frost and icy patches on roads could pose hazards.
