Kashmiri Pandits Exodus Part-II

Both the governments downplayed the migration part two fearing the exposure and puncturing of their normalcy theory and narrative which in fact is false and utopian

February 05, 2023 | Omkar Dattatray

The first exodus of the aborigines of Kashmir - Kashmiri Pandits in the independent history and secular democracy of the country has taken place more than three decades in 1989-90 at gun point and amid threats and warnings of leaving Kashmir. Thus the most unfortunate displacement of Kashmiri Pandits from their place of birth has left them homeless and they were and are suffering for the last over three decades and the hapless miniscule Kashmiri Pandit community were forced to leave their homes and hearths and they took refuge in hot and humid climate of Jammu and other states of India and the sad memories of the exodus have become fresh when after the killing of the Rahul Bhat a package employees in his work place in Chadoora Budgam created panic, scare and fear in the KP community in general and the Pandit Package employees in particular and this unfortunate killing and other killings in Chottigam Shopian of Sunil Bhat and injury to another Kashmiri Pandit created the fresh wave of exodus as these killings resulted in the fresh forced migration of the Kashmiri Pandit community after May 2022 as majority of the Pandit package employees migrated to Jammu as the fear of gun and targeted killings led to KP exodus two unsung and unwept and the greatest tragedy is that this exodus part two was ignored and overlooked by the BJP government of centre and their sole ruler and representative LG in the UT for the fear of their being exposed. Both the governments downplayed the migration part two fearing the exposure and puncturing of their normalcy theory and narrative which in fact is false and utopian.

Earlier in October 2021 when the non migrant renowned Kashmiri Pandit chemist M.L.Bindroo who served the Kashmiris was killed in the centre of Srinagar city in his medical shop created fear and scare and the KP’s were in duress particularly the package employees and they were forced to migrate to Jammu but the UT administration prevailed on them as it ensured the KP community that no further targeted killings will take place and pledged security and safety to the community and they shelved their exodus but when the targeted killings of the KP’s and other minorities from Jammu and the non local laborers and the bank Manager Vijay Kumar took place the Pandit Package employees,Reserved category employees from Jammu and the non local laborers were forced to leave Kashmir for the safety of their life ,limb and dignity.
Fresh migration after more than thirty years of the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits is very unfortunate and painful and it points towards the fact that the BJP government of centre which is shouting at the top of its voice that the Kashmir is limping back to normalcy post abrogation of article 370 and 35 A has in fact miserably failed to protect the Kashmiri Pandits, other Hindu minorities and other innocent Kashmiris. But the centre government of the BJP and the LG administration of the UT downplays the exodus part two fearing the exposure of their normalcy narrative. The Kashmiri Pandit package employees are on a continuous and indefinite peaceful protest for the last 265 days for their only and genuine demand of relocation to Jammu till the ground situation becomes normal across Kashmir.
But the LG administration and the centre government is paying a blind eye towards the genuine demand of the package employees and this shows the insensitivity of both the centre and the UT government. However to the dismay of these hapless and patriotic and nationalist employees the government has stopped their salaries from the last six months thus putting them in great financial trouble and crisis. The LG government is employing the muscular policy towards the Package employees and is coercing these employees to resume their duties in the most hostile environment. Thus instead of providing some succor to these Pandit employees, the UT government is ignoring their peaceful protest and is hell bent on harming their interests.Government is harassing these employees and is using coercive tactics to suppress, divide and sabotage their genuine and peaceful agitation. The government is is not allowing these package employees to meet them and is failing to hold dialogue with these employees.
The rigid and inflexible attitude of the centre and UT government shows the callous and insensitiveness of both governments. The egoistic attitude of the BJP government of the centre and the UT administration is making the package employees as sacrificial goats as they are forcing and pressurizing them to resume their duties Kashmir in most unfavorable environment and hostile atmosphere where gun rules the roost and where the targeted killings of the selective targets that is Kashmiri Pandits continues. The barbaric killing of a non migrant Kashmiri Pandit petty orchardist in the compound of his house in Chadurgund village of Shopian in broad day light is hair raising and it is a question mark on the normalcy claim of the government and shows the failure of the government to stop the targeted killings. The UT government is so insensitive and indifferent towards the Kashmiri Pandits that it does not register the fresh migrant Pandits for the fear of it being exposed for its false normalcy.
The bitter truth that the targeted killings are taking place in Kashmir is downplayed and ignored by the government and they are busy in saying that everything is all right across Kashmir and the militancy is on its last leg while the fact is that the new terror outfits are coming up and hybrid militants are continuing mayhem and killings. Very recently a non-migrant Kashmiri Pandit was shot at in his medical shop in D.H.Pora of South Kashmir but as good luck was to him the militant missed the target and with the presence of mind he was saved and he also attacked the militant with a stick while the militant fled away with the warning of not sparing him. This shows that the militancy is not dying but is active and alive although in new forms and manifestations.
Therefore the government should not ignore these killings and attacks on the minorities but should call a spade a spade but it will not do so as it claims normalcy which is a false and fake claim and does not prevail at all.AMEK-an organization representing package employees have made a documentary to showcase exodus second or part two and it was released in the office premises of Relief Commissioner Migrants on 19th January on the night of which the exodus began thirty three years before .In the documentary the pain ,suffering and trauma of the KP exiles is shown correctly and with precision along with the government apathy and insensitivity. The LG only claims that his government is sensitive to the issues of the package employees and says that the government is building the accommodation for package employees and it has addressed the issue of their promotions but the Package employees are protesting only for their temporary attachment to Jammu till the situation becomes conducive for the living and working of the Package employees. The UT government should prove its sensitivity towards the package employees by releasing the salaries which the government has stopped. Besides, the government should immediately hold a meaningful dialogue with the real representatives of the package employees to end the deadlock by working out a viable media for the settlement of their genuine demand of relocation. If the government has any reservation with the word relocation, they better use the word temporary attachment, adjustment and thus order the same and it will not affect the flawed policy of the BJP government. In short the government should heal the wounds of the Pandit Package employees and not sprinkle salt on their wounds which will prove counterproductive.
