The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) — one of India’s oldest trade bodies, established 102 years ago — convened its 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday at Hotel The Kabo, Wazir Bagh, Srinagar. The meeting, presided over by President Javid Ahmad Tenga, witnessed significant participation from past presidents, executive members, senior business leaders, and entrepreneurs, reflecting the Chamber’s wide representation across sectors.
The AGM began with the presentation of the Annual Administrative Report by Secretary General Faiz Ahmad Bakshi, highlighting key initiatives undertaken since September 2024. These included policy advocacy, reduction of GST on handicrafts and essential goods, promotion of tourism, support for MSMEs, and sustained efforts to strengthen Kashmir’s trade and service ecosystem.
The Administrative Report, Auditor’s Report, Statement of Income & Expenditure, and Budget for 2025–26 were unanimously approved, signalling confidence in the Chamber’s functioning. However, elections for the Executive Committee (2025–27) and office bearers were deferred following an order by the District Magistrate, Srinagar.
To ensure continuity, the House unanimously passed a resolution moved by past president Abdul Hamid Punjabi, extending the tenure of the existing Executive Committee and office bearers until new elections are held. Another resolution approved the creation of an Empowered Committee to oversee the construction of a long-awaited Chamber House at Rajbagh — envisioned as a permanent institutional hub for the business community.
The AGM also honoured past presidents Rauf Ahmad Punjabi and Nazir Ahmad Dar, and senior members Syed Masood Ahmad Shah and Nazir Ahmad Wani, for their significant contributions to KCCI’s legacy.
Members voiced concern over the election deferment and urged firm action against attempts to disrupt the Chamber’s operations. They also raised pending trade and policy issues requiring urgent government attention.
In his address, President Javid Ahmad Tenga urged unity and resilience amid the temporary setback. “Our Chamber has weathered decades of challenges. This deferment should not weaken us but inspire renewed commitment to our mission,” he said.
Tenga reaffirmed KCCI’s role as the “collective conscience” of Kashmir’s business fraternity and pledged vigorous pursuit of trade, industrial, and policy issues with the government. He also underscored the significance of the Chamber House project as a symbol of stability and vision for the future.
The AGM concluded with a vote of thanks, with members reiterating their commitment to strengthening KCCI’s role as the leading voice of Kashmir’s trade, commerce, and industry.
