The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) expresses its strong support for the initiative aimed at distributing free modified modern steel carpet looms to artisans, asserting that this move is not only timely but also essential for revitalizing the carpet sector of Kashmir.
The KCCI commends the Jammu and Kashmir government, *Industries and Commerce Department* , Indian Institute of Carpet Technology and its Director Zubair Ahmad for recognizing the pressing needs of the artisan community. The distribution of these modern looms marks a significant step toward enhancing the working environment for weavers, which is crucial to improving their productivity and the overall quality of their craft.
However, KCCI demands that looms be distributed to a larger number of artisans. While the distribution of 100 looms is a progressive step, it is imperative that this initiative be expanded after evaluating the effectiveness of the looms and confirming that they meet the expected standards for which they are designed.
Historically, the carpet weaving industry has been a cornerstone of Kashmir’s economy, providing livelihoods to thousands of artisans and their families. However, traditional looms often present challenges, including limited mobility and less ergonomic design, which can hinder weavers' efficiency and comfort. The introduction of modified modern steel carpet looms is expected to address these issues effectively.
It is pertinent to mention that the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) conducted a ‘Draw of Lots’ to select 100 active registered carpet weavers who are eligible to receive these innovative looms.
KCCI strongly believes that embracing modern technology is essential to elevating the standards of craftsmanship and empowering artisans. By facilitating access to effective tools and resources, we aim to ensure that the skills of our weavers are complemented by the latest advancements in weaving technology.
KCCI looks forward to witnessing the positive impact of this initiative on the lives of weavers and the overall growth of the carpet industry in Kashmir.
KCCI also thanks the Director IICT and his team for this initiative and hopes that these modern looms are distributed among all carpet artisans soon.
