Keran,, Sep 6: The Keran Mela 2026 commenced today in the picturesque border village of Keran in Kupwara district, with the Army’s Chinar Corps and the civil administration joining hands to promote tourism, local culture and community engagement.

The month-long event is aimed at showcasing Keran’s natural beauty, unique border identity and rich cultural heritage while creating greater opportunities for visitors to explore the region. Keran, known for the distinctive presence of opposing Indian and Pakistani flag sites, offers a unique setting for the festival.
A range of sporting activities has been planned as part of the Mela, including cricket tournaments, volleyball championships, tug-of-war contests and ‘Run for Fun’ races. These events are expected to draw participation from local youth and strengthen community involvement.
The festivities will culminate on September 27 with a grand cultural programme showcasing the region’s traditional music, dance and cultural heritage. The finale is expected to provide visitors with an opportunity to experience Kashmir’s diverse traditions while celebrating the spirit of unity and community.
The organisers said the Mela is intended not only as a recreational event but also as a platform to highlight Keran as an emerging tourism destination. Increased tourist footfall could provide a boost to local businesses and create livelihood opportunities for residents.
