January 03, 2026 | Shafat Ahmad Wani

Hazrat Khwaja Muhammad Yusuf Matjoo Sani, popularly known as Khwaja Bab Sahib (RA), was born on 10th Muharram 900 AH in Chhatbal, Srinagar. His father was Khwaja Muhammad Akbar Matjoo and his mother Hazrat Syeda Fatima (RA). Blessed with extraordinary intelligence, he memorized the Holy Qur’an at the tender age of five.

He faced early hardships in life, losing his father at the age of twelve and his mother at eighteen. After this, he turned towards Bachwara, dedicating himself fully to the spread of Islam and spiritual learning. He acquired deep knowledge of the Qur’an and Hadith under the guidance of Sheikh Yaqub Sarfi Jame Kamalat Alishan Sahib of Zaina Kadal, also known as Hazrat Kamal Kashmiri (RA).
Khwaja Bab Sahib (RA) was honored with the opportunity to visit the sacred shrines of Haramain Sharifain, including the shrines of Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), Imam Abu Hanifa (RA), Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA), Amir Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA), Hazrat Bahauddin Naqshband Bukhari (RA), and Hazrat Fariduddin Ganj Shakar (RA). He also visited Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Ajmeri (RA) and Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA), staying in Ajmer for nearly a month. He maintained close spiritual associations with great saints such as Khwaja Habibullah Nowsheri (RA), Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi Mujaddid Alf Sani (RA), and other eminent scholars of the time. He belonged to the Qadriya Sufi order.
Upon returning to Kashmir, he settled in Buchwara, Srinagar, where he devoted himself to preaching Islam and spiritual guidance. For nearly twenty years, he worshipped at Khanqah Durjan near Dal Gate, a place historically associated with renowned saints including Amir Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA). His message was simple yet profound: Allah is One, Muhammad (PBUH) is His Messenger, and salvation lies in following the Sunnah.
Numerous miracles (karamaat) are attributed to him, and many non-Muslims embraced Islam through his influence, wisdom, and character. After a long life of devotion and service, Khwaja Bab Sahib (RA) passed away at the age of 101 years on 29th Rajab-ul-Murjab 1001 AH, after experiencing pain in his blessed head.
His funeral prayer was led by Hazrat Khwaja Habibullah Nowsheri (RA). He was laid to rest at the foothills of Takht-e-Sulaiman in Buchwara, Srinagar, where his shrine remains a place of reverence and spiritual reflection for devotees to this day.
