Srinagar, Aug 26: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo has called for strict action against those found responsible for the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Kishtwar, stressing the need for stronger measures to protect children in educational institutions.

Speaking to reporters, Itoo described the incident as unfortunate and deeply concerning, saying such cases can create fear and insecurity among parents and students.

She stressed that schools must provide a safe environment for girl students and said stringent action should follow if anyone is found responsible for wrongdoing.

The remarks came after the death of a 14-year-old girl from the Chatroo area of Kishtwar, who died while being shifted for medical treatment after reportedly being found pregnant.

Police have arrested a government school teacher, identified as Khalid Hussain Sheikh, who was posted as a Teacher Grade-II at Middle School Bumalpora in Zone Inderwal. An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The Chief Education Officer, Kishtwar, has also placed the teacher under suspension pending an inquiry.

The incident has led to protests in parts of Kishtwar, with residents demanding strict action and accountability. Police have also arrested the accused teacher’s brother in connection with circumstances surrounding the reported attempt to terminate the pregnancy.

Itoo said the Education Department would focus on strengthening child-protection safeguards and ensuring that students, particularly girls, feel secure in educational institutions.

She emphasized the need for schools to maintain an environment where children can study without fear and where concerns relating to their safety are addressed promptly.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s pregnancy, medical complications and death is underway.
