
The University of Kashmir successfully concluded its Inter-College Volleyball and Weightlifting Tournaments, organized by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPE&S).
More than 320 athletes from various colleges participated across men’s and women’s categories.
Held under the University’s Annual Sports Calendar, the tournaments showcased outstanding talent, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit, providing a platform for students to qualify for All India and North Zone Inter-University Championships under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
Women’s Volleyball
In the women’s volleyball event, 23 teams from across the Kashmir Division competed over ten days. The final featured a thrilling five-set battle between the Post Graduate team and Government College of Physical Education (GCOPE), Ganderbal. After a strong comeback by the Post Graduate team, GCOPE, Ganderbal clinched the championship in the decisive final set.
Weightlifting Championship
The University hosted the Inter-College Weightlifting Championship for the first time, promoting Olympic and Commonwealth disciplines. Over ten colleges participated, with GDC Shopian, Srinagar Women’s College, and the Post Graduate contingent securing the top three positions in the overall medal tally.
A prize distribution ceremony held at Ground “A” of the Varsity saw medals and certificates presented by Prof. Showkat Ahmad Shah (Department of Psychology) and Dr. Surjeet Singh (Coordinator, Directorate of Physical Education and Sports).
Prof. Shah congratulated the participants and stressed the role of sports in fostering resilience and mental alertness.
Dr. Singh reiterated the Directorate’s commitment to expanding sporting disciplines and providing broader competitive opportunities.
The event proceedings were conducted by Mr. Tausif Bhat (Assistant Director) and Mr. Muneer Alam (Volleyball Coach).
